Blistering

Blisters form due to gas evolution in the weld under pressure, causing bulges and impairing the paint system.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Gases like hydrogen or carbon dioxide escape from the metal and form blisters under pressure. This happens especially at high pressure and low temperature.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Blisters can lead to cracks and deformation, affecting the material. The paint system is damaged and loses its protective function. This can lead to corrosion and premature failure of components.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

Use dry welding procedures or carefully remove organic protective coatings before welding. Keep temperature and pressure under control to minimize gas formation. After welding, inspect the weld for blisters and perform post-treatment if necessary.
