Blocky pearlite

A coarse-grained pearlite microstructure with thick lamellar spacings resulting from delayed nucleation and growth at elevated transformation temperatures. This structure exhibits lower strength values compared to fine pearlite.

Blocky pearlite forms when the structure transforms at too high a temperature and nucleation is too slow. Then the lamellar spacing becomes thick and the structure becomes coarse. In welding, this is a problem because the weld loses strength and becomes more brittle, which promotes cracking. So you have to control the cooling so that the transformation doesn't happen too hot and too sluggish. Watch the cooling rate, then the pearlite stays fine and the material tough.
