Flanged joint mating geometry

The flange weld joint geometry describes the shape and position of the joint in a weld. Optimal geometry prevents porosity, improves strength, and facilitates drawing.

The flanged edge must be clean and evenly formed so it can be slipped on well and the gap is uniform. If the geometry doesn't fit, you won't get a clean weld pool, but pores or even cracks. Make sure the material doesn't overheat and the edge doesn't fray. If the fit is too loose or too tight, the weld won't penetrate properly and loses strength.
