Flanged Joint Preparation
Flange weld geometry: Edges of sheets are flanged at right angles and joined by remelting, without filler material.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
The flanged edge seam geometry connects the edges of sheets by remelting the metal bodies. The right-angled flanging ensures that the weld seam is built up stably and evenly.
Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding
An incorrect flanged edge seam geometry can lead to uneven joints, which results in cracks or weak points in the seam. An angle that is too large can make remelting more difficult and reduce strength.
Workshop practice & instructions
Make sure the edges of the sheets are flanged at a precise right angle. Use a high welding temperature and slow cooling (t8/5 > 20 s) to achieve a homogeneous structure. Check the seam after welding for cracks or unevenness.
