Torch Cooling System
Torch cooling is a closed coolant circuit that regulates the temperature of welding torches and prevents them from overheating. This protects nozzles and contact tips from thermal overload.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Torch cooling uses a coolant that circulates in a closed loop. The coolant draws heat away from the torch and cooling resistors and transfers it to a heat sink, which then dissipates it. This process is controlled by the pump and cooling resistors.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Without adequate torch cooling, the following problems can occur:
• Overheated nozzles can be damaged, leading to leaks or failures.
• Current contacts can corrode or be damaged, causing disruptions in the electrical system.
• The torch's lifespan is shortened and efficiency drops.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To ensure effective torch cooling, note the following:
• Make sure the coolant circuit is clean and leak-free.
• Monitor the coolant temperature and adjust the cooling resistors accordingly.
• Use a high-quality coolant and ensure regular replacement and cleaning.
