Arc strike

Arc strike: Local damage from striking the arc, leading to hardening and cracks.

Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism

An arc strike occurs when the arc light unintentionally hits the material surface. This causes rapid heating of the surface, which leads to localized hardening.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The hardening can lead to cracks and distortion in the material, especially if the material is susceptible to brittleness. This can impair the overall integrity of the weld.

Shop Practice & Action Steps

Use a shielded work environment and protect the material surface from direct arc light. Make sure to wear proper protective clothing and use face shields. If you discover an arc strike, carefully remove the hardened material and check the weld for cracks or distortion.
