Fracture Energy

The fracture energy is the work required to break a test specimen in the Charpy impact test. It measures the impact toughness of the material at different temperatures.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The fracture energy is determined in the Charpy impact test by striking a test specimen under a constant pressure at a specific temperature. The work required to break the specimen is measured and provides an indication of the impact toughness of the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

The fracture energy is important for evaluating the mechanical properties of a material under different temperatures. A value that is too low can indicate low impact toughness and possible cracks or deformations, while a high value shows that the material behaves well under impacts. In welding, it is crucial to consider the fracture energy to ensure that the material remains stable under the selected process conditions and that no mechanical defects occur.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To determine the fracture energy, a test specimen is struck under a constant pressure at a specific temperature. The work required to break the specimen is measured and recorded. In welding, it is important to ensure that the process conditions (temperature, pressure) are set so that the fracture energy of the material remains within an acceptable range. This can be ensured by selecting the appropriate welding process and the correct process settings.
