Calcium inclusion modification

Calcium inclusion modification transforms brittle sulfides into globular forms, increasing transverse toughness.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Calcium reacts with brittle stringer sulfides to form stable calcium sulfides. These new compounds are more globular and less prone to cracking.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Modification with calcium prevents the formation of brittle sulfides that can lead to hot cracking and transverse cracking. It increases the toughness and ductility of the weld.

Workshop practice & instructions

Add calcium to the weld pool to stabilize the sulfides. The exact amount depends on the steel used and the welding method. In high-temperature processes like TIG welding, additional calcium addition is beneficial.
