Carbonitriding Diffusion Zone

A thermochemically enriched surface layer where both carbon and significantly diffused nitrogen penetrate simultaneously. It substantially increases the dynamic load capacity of gears and shafts.

In carbonitriding, carbon and nitrogen diffuse into the surface layer simultaneously. This makes the surface hard and wear-resistant, but also more brittle. If you have to weld such a part, remember: the hardened case breaks easily and can crack during welding. You should grind or remove the layer beforehand, otherwise you'll have trouble with hardness and stresses in the transition zone. And the heat from welding can locally alter the hardening again, so don't treat the part like normal structural steel afterward.
