CET Formula for Thermal Cracking Criteria

An alternative carbon equivalent specifically tailored to modern microalloyed steels, realistically reflecting the influence of alloying elements on crack formation.

The CET formula is a carbon equivalent used to estimate how weldable a steel is. It gives you an indication of whether you have to expect hardening cracks in the heat-affected zone. The higher the value, the more sensitive the material, and the more you need to slow down cooling, e.g., by preheating. In practice, this means: First check the CET value, then decide whether you can weld cold without measures or whether you need to take steps to control the cooling rate.
