Chemical Passivation

The targeted formation of a thin, oxidic protective layer on corrosion-resistant metals by removing free iron from the surface. This enhances chemical resistance against aggressive media.

Passivating means treating the surface so that a protective oxide layer forms. When welding, you have to be careful not to damage this layer – too much heat or wrong grinding can ruin the corrosion resistance. After welding, the zone should be clean and free of discoloration, then the passive layer builds up again by itself. If you are unsure whether the surface is okay again, do a simple corrosion test before releasing the part.
