Chemical Degreasing

A preparatory cleaning step using surfactant-containing or solvent-based baths to remove oils and greases. This is a mandatory prerequisite for subsequent pickling and passivation.

Chemical degreasing is basically simple washing: the agent dissolves the oil and grease from the surface so that it doesn't get into the weld and cause pores. If you weld greasy sheets, you'll quickly get a porous, crappy weld that just doesn't hold. So you put the part in the degreasing bath, let it work briefly, and then rinse it thoroughly with clean water. It's important that the workpiece is completely dry afterwards before you start welding or pickling – residual moisture is just as harmful as the grease before.
