Chemical Descaling Bath

An aqueous, typically alkaline or acidic solution used to remove high-temperature scale layers prior to subsequent processing steps, chemically dissolving oxides without over-etching the underlying metal structure.

Chemical descaling bath means: you put the part in an acid or caustic solution that chemically dissolves the scale. The bath eats away the scale without you having to go at it mechanically. It's important to keep an eye on the dwell time – too short and scale remains in spots, too long and the bath may attack the base material. After the bath, you must rinse the part thoroughly, otherwise residual bath keeps working and you get unsightly stains or corrosion.
