Cobalt Solid Solution Stabilization
Cobalt mixed-crystal stabilization increases hot strength and thermal fatigue resistance in highly stressed alloys by stabilizing the microstructure.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism
Cobalt mixed-crystal stabilization prevents the transformation of the microstructure into glass-hard phases at high temperatures. It reduces the formation of mixed crystals that are prone to thermal fatigue.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Without cobalt mixed-crystal stabilization, alloys can become glass-hard at high temperatures and more prone to cracks and thermal fatigue. This can lead to premature failure under stress.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use cobalt mixed-crystal stabilized alloys in highly stressed applications, such as mechanical engineering or aerospace. Ensure the weld is cooled at correct temperatures and times (t8/5 between 10 and 20 seconds) to stabilize the microstructure and avoid thermal fatigue.
