Cap / Reinforcement
Cap / Reinforcement is the visible reinforcement of a weld that protrudes above the surface of the base material. It results from filler materials and incompletely dissolved metals in the weld pool.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Decks form when during welding filler materials like silicon or carbon concentrate on the surface of the weld pool. These react with the metal and form a dense layer on the weld surface.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Decks can cause aesthetic problems as they contaminate the workpiece surface. They can also take up mechanical loads and make the material susceptible to corrosion. In extreme cases, decks can lead to cracks or damage in the workpiece.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To minimize decks, welding parameters such as temperature and time must be precisely controlled. Use a clean weld pool and control the carbon content in the pool. For heavily loaded or critical applications, special post-weld treatment like polishing may be necessary.
