Degenerate Eutectic

Degenerated eutectic is an irregular, disturbed formation of the eutectic structure due to unfavorable cooling conditions or alloying influences. The typical lamellar shape is distorted.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The eutectic is a special metallurgical structure that transitions from two phases to a homogeneous phase during cooling. Irregular cooling or unfavorable additives produce disturbed structures with distorted lamellae.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A degenerate eutectic leads to uneven toughness and increased risk of cracking. The distorted lamellae cannot absorb mechanical loads well, reducing component lifespan.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid a degenerate eutectic, ensure controlled cooling and optimize the alloy. Use additives like silicon or titanium if needed to improve toughness and structure.
