Deoxidation by aluminum

Aluminum reduces oxygen in the melt and prevents pores. It refines the grain structure and increases toughness.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Aluminum reacts with dissolved oxygen in the steel melt to reduce it. This prevents the formation of pores in the weld deposit.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Sufficient deoxidation by aluminum leads to defect-free welds with good toughness. Too little aluminum can lead to porosity and poorer mechanical properties.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Add 0.1 to 0.3% aluminum to the molten pool, depending on the steel type. Monitor deoxidation and correct aluminum feed if necessary.
