Deoxidation by silicon
Silicon binds oxygen and prevents pore formation in the melt, increases strength and scale resistance. Excessive use leads to embrittlement.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Silicon reacts with oxygen in the liquid state and forms silicate complexes that lower the oxygen content in the melt. This prevents the formation of pores and oxide inclusions.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
A too high silicon content (above approx. 0.40%) can lead to embrittlement of the weld and increase the tendency for hot cracking. This can lead to failed welding attempts and unsafe joints.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Use silicon in the amounts recommended by the manufacturer to minimize pore formation. Make sure the silicon content does not exceed 0.40% in combination with carbon to avoid risks of embrittlement and hot cracking.
