Deoxidizing Wire

Deoxidation wire contains silicon, manganese, or aluminum to absorb oxygen pores. It prevents porosity and increases strength.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Deoxidation wire chemically reacts with the molten pool and binds free oxygen atoms. This prevents pores from forming in the weld metal.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Without deoxidation wire, oxygen pores can form in the weld metal, impairing strength and toughness. Pores can also lead to hot cracking.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Use deoxidation wire when welding with high oxygen content, such as when welding steel. Lay the wire in the molten pool and run the weld. Make sure the wire does not contain too much silicon, as this can lead to embrittlement.
