Deoxidizer Efficiency
Deoxidizer efficiency refers to the capability of additives like aluminum, silicon, or manganese to reduce dissolved oxygen in the melt and separate out oxide particles. High efficiency prevents porosity and improves weld strength.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Deoxidizers react chemically with dissolved oxygen in the melt to form oxide particles, which can then be separated out. For example, silicon binds oxygen to form silicate, which stays liquid in the weld pool and prevents pores.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Low deoxidizer efficiency leads to a high number of pores in the weld, impairing strength and toughness. This can cause cracking and distortion in the workpiece. High efficiency, on the other hand, ensures a clean weld without pores.
Shop Practice & Action Instructions
To optimize deoxidizer efficiency, the following measures should be taken:
• Use appropriate additives like aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), or manganese (Mn) in correct amounts.
• Ensure additives are properly mixed into the weld pool.
• Monitor the temperature in the weld pool, as excessive temperature can reduce deoxidation efficiency.
