Deoxidizer in Welding Wire
Deoxidizers like silicon, manganese, or aluminum in welding wire bind oxygen and prevent oxidation. They minimize porosity and improve strength.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Deoxidizers react with dissolved gases in the weld pool, such as oxygen, to form oxides. These oxides then float out more easily and can be separated from the weld pool.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Without deoxidizers, many pores form in the weld metal, which weaken it and affect mechanical properties. Too little deoxidizer can lead to insufficient oxide reduction, which also causes pores. Too much can cause fusion problems and a rough surface.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use the right welding wire with the appropriate deoxidizer content for the chosen welding process. For TIG welding, a low oxygen content in the gas is good; for MIG welding, a higher oxygen content can help. Pay attention to correct gas flow and the right melting ratio.
