Deoxidizer Manganese

Manganese binds oxygen and sulfur, forms manganese oxides and sulfides, improves strength, and prevents porosity.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Manganese reacts in the molten pool with oxygen and sulfur, forming manganese oxide (MnO) and manganese sulfide (MnS). These compounds prevent porosity in the weld.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

Too high manganese content can cause fusion problems and reduce the toughness of the steel. Excessive amounts can also produce hazardous gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) during welding.

Workshop practice & instructions

Use manganese in amounts of 0.1 to 0.5% for ordinary steels. For high-performance steels, the content can be increased to a maximum of 1%. Make sure the melting temperature is not too high to avoid porosity.
