Deoxidizer Silicon
Silicon reacts with oxygen in the weld pool and forms silicates, which promotes deoxidation. It prevents porosity and increases the strength and scale resistance of the steel.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Silicon reacts with free oxygen in the molten steel to form silicate complexes. These compounds are stable and prevent porosity.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Too high silicon content (above 0.40%) can cause brittleness in the weld and increase susceptibility to hot cracking. Too low content can lead to poor mechanical properties and porosity.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use silicon in the amounts recommended by the steel manufacturer. Regularly monitor the deoxidation level in the weld pool and adjust the silicon amount to achieve optimal porosity-free and mechanical properties.
