Deoxidizing Additive
Deoxidizers like silicon, manganese, or aluminum bind oxygen and prevent porosity in the weld. This improves strength and toughness.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
Deoxidizers react with dissolved oxygen in the molten weld pool to bind it. This prevents oxygen from forming pores in the weld.
Metallurgical relevance & welding risks
Too much deoxidizer addition can cause brittleness and increased susceptibility to hot cracking. Too little addition, on the other hand, can lead to porosity and reduced mechanical properties of the weld.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use an optimal amount of deoxidizer according to the alloying instructions. Regularly check the oxygen content in the weld pool and adjust the addition accordingly.
