Diamond pyramid
Diamond pyramid is a precisely ground indenter with a 136-degree tip angle, mainly suitable for Vickers hardness testing. Due to its extreme diamond hardness, the pyramid is suitable for testing very hard materials.
Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The diamond pyramid has a tip with an angle of 136 degrees. It is pressed into the material to be tested under a fixed load, and the depth of penetration is measured. The hardness of the material is calculated from the load and the area of the pyramid.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
The diamond pyramid is extremely hard and can be indented very precisely. This makes it ideal for hardness testing of steels, high-carbon materials, and other very hard materials. Misuse or faulty measurement can lead to inaccurate results.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use the diamond pyramid in Vickers hardness testing with a load of 1.0 kg. The pyramid should be indented precisely, and the material should be stationary and cold. The depth of penetration is measured and hardness is calculated. Make sure the pyramid is clean and free of contaminants.
