Density Sequence
Stacking sequence is a sequence of close-packed planes in a crystal lattice that influences the formation of different metals and alloys.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
The stacking sequence describes how atoms arrange in a crystal lattice. Typically, the closest-packed planes are found at the beginning and end of the crystal. This arrangement influences the stability and behavior of the material under different conditions.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
During welding, stacking sequences can cause phase transformations that impair mechanical properties. For example, uneven grain coarsening or lack of homogenization can contaminate the material and reduce its toughness.
Workshop practice & instructions
To minimize stacking sequences, it is important to cool the weld as quickly as possible. This can be achieved by high cooling rates, using a strong cooling gas stream or a special cooling method. For complex alloys, it is advisable to perform homogenization before welding to make the grain size distribution uniform.
