Thickness Resonance Measurement
Resonance thickness measurement is an ultrasonic method that determines wall thickness of metals by analyzing standing waves at characteristic natural frequencies.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Resonance thickness measurement uses ultrasonic waves that are reflected and interfere within the sample wall. At certain frequencies, resonances occur with a strong increase in amplitude. This resonance frequency is directly proportional to wall thickness.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Measuring wall thickness is crucial for the quality and safety of weld joints, especially in pipelines or pressure vessels. An inaccurate measurement can lead to underestimated or overestimated walls, posing risks like leaks or fractures.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use an ultrasonic device with a resonance thickness measurement function. Make sure the device is calibrated and the sample is clean. Apply the sound beam perpendicular to the sample wall and observe the resonance frequency on the display. Calculate the wall thickness using the formula: D = λ / (4 * f), where λ is the wavelength and f is the resonance frequency.
