Diffusion-Barrier Interlayer
An intermediate layer that prevents diffusion of elements between metals and increases the integrity of the weld.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
The diffusion-inhibiting intermediate layer forms a barrier-like layer between the metals to be welded. It prevents direct contact and diffusion of elements, which prevents the melting of unwanted alloy phases.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks When Welding
Without such an intermediate layer, diffusion effects can occur that impair the properties of the weld. This leads to uneven deformation and possible cracks or destruction in the transition zone.
Shop Practice & Instructions
Use diffusion-inhibiting intermediate layers in dissimilar metal joints to increase the integrity and strength of the weld. Pay attention to the correct application and the right material for the intermediate layer.
