Diffusion Bonding
Diffusion welding creates a homogeneous joint through atomic rearrangement across the interface at high temperature and pressure. There is no visible fusion line.
Physicochemical Mechanism
In diffusion welding, atoms of the joining partners migrate across the interface under the influence of temperature and pressure. This leads to a homogeneous joint with a gradual change in chemical composition.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Diffusion welding is especially suitable for high-quality applications, as it produces very high strength and toughness. However, the process time can be long, and temperature control must be very precise. Too rapid a diffusion rate can cause deformation, while too slow a rate makes the process impractical.
Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines
Diffusion welding requires special equipment with high pressure and temperature. The joining partners must be clean before the process. The process time varies by material but typically ranges from 30 minutes to several hours. Temperature must be precisely controlled to achieve an optimal diffusion rate.
