Sherardizing
Thermochemical process for producing a zinc-iron alloy coating by exposing small parts to zinc dust at elevated temperatures.
Diffusion galvanizing means zinc is driven into the steel surface with heat, forming an alloy layer that adheres really well. It's tougher and more abrasion-resistant than just applied zinc. When welding, you have to be careful: the zinc layer burns off and can cause pores or cracks. If you weld the parts afterwards, grind off the layer in the weld area beforehand. The galvanizing itself is not intended for welding, but for corrosion protection.
