Directed Energy Deposition with Wire

A directed energy deposition additive manufacturing process where metallic wire feedstock is continuously melted by a focused energy beam. It is used for the rapid generation of large-scale metal structures.

When welding with wire feed and a focused energy beam, you melt the wire at the beam spot and deposit it onto the workpiece. The structure depends heavily on heat input and cooling – too hot or too cold causes trouble with cracks or poor fusion. Set the power and wire feed so that the melt flows cleanly without overheating the material or causing uncontrolled spatter. The distance between the beam and wire must be right so that the wire melts evenly and the weld bead is clean.
