Direct Quenching

Direct quenching of the workpiece straight from the carburizing temperature without intermediate cooling.

In direct hardening, the workpiece goes straight from the carburizing heat into the hardening bath. This avoids the intermediate step where unwanted intermediate stages can form in the structure, leading to cracks. It's important that the part is quenched cleanly and evenly, otherwise the hardening will be uneven. If you do it cleanly, you get a hard, tough case layer without the risk of hot cracking.
