Double-U groove butt joint

A symmetrical dual-side U-groove design for very thick sections allowing balanced welding sequences to compensate for distortion. It minimizes heat input per pass in heavy-wall components.

The double-U groove is a joint preparation for thick-walled parts where you weld from both sides. The advantage is that you build up the weld in several smaller passes from both sides instead of one big pass from one side. This distributes the heat better and keeps distortion and residual stresses lower than with a single-V groove. Just make sure the joint is prepared symmetrically and the back side is properly welded out before you close the other side.
