Double-V-groove

Double-V groove reduces weld metal consumption on thick plates by joining symmetrically from both sides.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The double-V groove distributes the weld metal volume requirement evenly on both sides of the groove. This minimizes stresses and prevents material from melting through.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

An uneven distribution of weld metal can lead to stress concentrations, causing cracking and hot cracking. A symmetrical groove, on the other hand, improves the strength and mechanical toughness of the joint.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use a double-V groove on thick plates to reduce weld metal consumption. Make sure the groove is beveled symmetrically and stresses are evenly distributed. The optimal groove opening is typically 1 to 2 mm.
