Three-Dimensional Heat Conduction in Plate
Three-dimensional heat conduction describes how energy in a sheet flows radially and axially. This affects the t8/5 time, which is critical for the weld structure.
Physico-chemical mechanism of action
Energy in the sheet is not only dissipated perpendicular to the surface (radial) but also parallel to the surface (axial). This leads to a complex temperature profile within the material.
Metallurgical relevance & risks during welding
Incorrect heat conduction can lead to uneven cooling and thus different microstructures in the weld. This increases susceptibility to cracks and changes the mechanical properties of the material.
Workshop practice & instructions
To ensure uniform cooling, for thick sheets:
• Maintain an adequate cooling time (t8/5), typically 10 to 20 seconds.
• Cool the weld in a protected environment to avoid uneven cooling.
