Duralumin

Duralumin is an aluminum alloy with copper, magnesium, and silicon. It has high strength and is used in aerospace.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Duralumin consists of aluminum, the main metal, with copper as a hardening agent. Magnesium and silicon improve corrosion resistance and the microstructure. The additions influence the crystal structure and the mechanical properties of the material.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

Due to the alloying elements, duralumin can be difficult to weld because it has high formability and low toughness. Incorrect welding parameters can lead to hot cracking or uneven distortion. It is important to use the right welding technique and filler material.

Workshop practice & instructions

Use a high-quality welding machine with precise temperature control for duralumin. Make sure the material is dry before welding and the weld pool is well supported. Use suitable shielding gas and ensure even cooling of the weld.
