Burn-through

Burn-through is the uncontrolled flowing out of the melt on the back side of the weld, leading to a hole. This happens when the melting pressure is too high or the workpiece thickness is too low.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

The molten metal penetrates uncontrolled through the workpiece because the pressure in the weld pool is higher than the surface tension of the material. This can lead to a hole.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

Burn-through can cause severe cracks and compromise the integrity of the part. The parts can no longer be safely used because the hole weakens the structure.

Workshop practice & instructions

To avoid burn-through, reduce the arc pressure and increase the workpiece thickness. Correct welding parameter selection is crucial.
