Radiographic Testing Class

Radiation absorption class indicates how strongly a material absorbs gamma rays. Class I is strongest, Class V is weakest.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

Gamma rays are attenuated by the electrons in the material. The more electrons a material has, the better it absorbs gamma rays.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A material that absorbs too weakly (high radiation absorption class) can be dangerous when working with radioactivity. It is important to choose the correct class for each application.

Workshop Practice & Operating Instructions

When welding materials with a high radiation absorption class (e.g., copper), extra safety measures must be taken, such as wearing protective clothing and setting up a shielded work environment.
