X-Ray Radiographic Testing

X-ray radiation is used to visualize internal material structures. It enables the detection of flaws and material defects in metals.

Physical-Chemical Working Principle

X-ray radiation consists of high-energy electrons that emit ionizing radiation when slowed down by a damping material (e.g., lead). This radiation can pass through metals and is absorbed or reflected by the materials.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Radiographic testing is especially helpful for detecting flaws like cracks, pores, or incomplete weld areas. Misinterpretations can lead to missed defects and thus a safety gap in the workpiece.

Shop Practice & Procedures

Use an X-ray tube with the appropriate voltage for the material. Make sure the detectors are properly calibrated and the radiation angles are optimally set. Document all results carefully.
