Durometer

A durometer is a hardness tester that works on a spring force principle. It measures the hardness of elastomers, plastics, and foam materials in the shop.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

A durometer tests the hardness of a material by pressing a fixed spring into a sample. The depth of penetration is measured and indicates how hard the material is.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

In the workshop, the durometer is used to check the hardness of weld test specimens. Hardness that is too high or too low could signal problems like overhardening or underhardening, which can lead to cracking or deformation.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To use the durometer correctly, select the right indenter (e.g., Shore A for soft elastomers, Shore D for hard plastics). Press the spring gently into the sample and read the hardness value. Compare the result with the specific material standards.
