Stainless Steel Pickling Paste

Stainless steel pickling paste is a viscous acid and fluoride mixture used to remove oxide layers on weld seams and heat-affected zones. It improves weld quality by ensuring cleanliness and reducing cracks.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Stainless steel pickling paste contains acids such as phosphoric acid and fluorides that specifically dissolve oxide layers on the surface. The viscous structure allows for even application and prevents the product from running.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

Oxide layers can impair the strength and toughness of weld seams by promoting cracks and weakening the bond between steel structures. By removing these layers with stainless steel pickling paste, the mechanical strength of the weld is increased and the occurrence of cracks is reduced.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Apply stainless steel pickling paste in a thickness of about 0.5 to 1 mm on the weld edges and heat-affected zones. Let it sit for at least 30 seconds, then rinse with water and dry the area thoroughly. Make sure the product is not too concentrated to avoid damaging the steel surface.
