Compressive residual stress

Internal compressive stress within a material that counteracts applied external tensile loads. It generally increases fatigue strength and resistance to cracking.

Shot peening or needle peening creates compressive residual stresses in the surface layer. The grains hit the surface and compress the material there. The layers underneath remain elastic and push back – this creates a compressive stress that makes crack initiation and propagation more difficult.
