Tensile residual stress
Internal tensile stress remaining in a component without external loading, often near the weld surface. It promotes crack growth and reduces fatigue life.
When you weld metal, you heat it locally and strongly. The material expands and contracts again as it cools. The surrounding cold material hinders this shrinking, so stresses remain trapped in the component, even when no external force acts.
