Residual Stress Depth Profile

The residual stress depth profile shows the stress distribution across the cross-section of a surface-hardened zone after shot peening or hammering. It is determined by X-ray diffractometry.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The mechanical stress in the material zone changes across the cross-section after shot peening or hammering. Stresses are highest at the surface and decrease towards the interior.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A non-uniform stress profile can lead to local cracking or deformation if the weld is not properly treated. It's important to consider the stress field to achieve a stable joint.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

Use X-ray diffractometry to determine the residual stress depth profile. Make sure to process the weld at the correct temperature range and with the appropriate stress to achieve a homogeneous joint.
