Stress Relaxation
The time-dependent decay of elastic stresses at constant total deformation through thermally activated creep processes. This mechanism controllably relieves unwanted manufacturing stresses.
You do stress-relief annealing to remove the internal stresses that remain in the material after welding or cooling. Without it, the part can later distort or even crack. You place the workpiece in the furnace, heat it evenly, and then let it cool slowly and controlled. The right temperature and holding time depend on the material – you have to follow the data sheet, but the principle is always the same: stress out, peace in.
