Root Undercut

A groove left unpopulated by weld metal along the edges of the weld bead or root area due to excessive thermal cutting action.

An undercut is a groove or notch in the base material right next to the weld. It happens when you put in too much heat or guide the torch wrong, causing the base material at the weld edge to melt away and leave a groove. This weakens the weld and can lead to cracks. Move the torch more calmly and evenly, and adjust the heat to the material, then you'll avoid it.
