Undercut Depth

Weld toe notch depth is the depth of an unacceptable notch at the weld transition, caused by the weld deposit. It significantly reduces the fatigue strength of the component.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

The weld toe notch depth is created by the weld deposit, which removes material. This notch can lead to uneven stresses and impair mechanical strength.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

A high weld toe notch depth can lead to reduced fatigue strength and cracks. It reduces the component's service life and can cause safety issues in service.

Workshop practice & instructions

To minimize weld toe notch depth, the weld should be deposited with as little material removal as possible. This requires careful preparation of the material and proper welding parameter selection. The weld toe notch depth should always be less than 0.5 mm.
