Indentation velocity

Penetration speed is the speed at which a test specimen penetrates into a material. An excessively fast speed can lead to measurement errors.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Penetration rate refers to the speed at which an indenter (e.g., a ball or rod) penetrates a material. This process can be caused by mechanical force or chemical reactions.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A too-fast penetration rate can lead to measurement errors in the elastic-plastic transition zone. This can result in not correctly capturing the actual state of the material and thus drawing incorrect conclusions. This has direct effects on quality assurance and confidence in test results.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid measurement errors, the penetration rate should be precisely controlled. This can be achieved by selecting the right indenter, correct temperature, and appropriate speed. It is important that the speed is kept constant and not too fast or too slow.
