Penetrant Removal Process

Penetrant removal is the process of removing excess penetrant from the part surface before applying the developer. This prevents false indications and improves weld quality.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism

The penetrant reacts with the metal surface and forms a chemical bond. Removing the penetrant breaks this bond, freeing the surface for the subsequent developer application.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

An incorrect process can lead to false indications, as the penetrant prevents the developer from properly reaching the surface. This can result in an incomplete weld or poor mechanical properties of the joint.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use water, solvent, or emulsifiers to remove the penetrant. Ensure the surface is completely clean and dry before applying the developer. A time of 30 seconds to 1 minute per part is typical.
