Fluorescent Penetrant Testing

Penetrant testing with fluorescent agents is a surface inspection method where a fluorescent dye penetrates microscopic irregularities and is visually indicated under UV light. It enables highly sensitive detection of cracks and pores.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A fluorescent dye is applied to the surface and penetrates microscopic irregularities such as cracks or pores. Under UV light, the dye fluoresces, making it optically visible.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

This test allows highly sensitive detection of cracks and pores on the surface. Missing or insufficient application of the dye can cause smaller defects not to become visible. Too much dye can contaminate the result and impair readability.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

1. Prepare the surface clean and remove all dirt and dust.

2. Apply the fluorescent dye in the correct concentration to the surface to be tested.

3. Let the material sit for at least 15 minutes to ensure the dye penetrates.

4. Examine the surface under UV light and note all visible defects.
